Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (1-0) captured their opening day contest in dramatic fashion, as the Ospreys rallied for a 3-2 win over Arcadia (0-1) on Friday night.
Gianna Morganti (Berlin/St. Joseph's) scored her first goal for Stockton with 1:49 remaining in the game for the game winning tally.
The Knights hit the cage first just 2:13 into the game for the early lead. Carly Flickinger made it 1-0 off a rebound. The game would remain that way through the first half. Stockton began to show signs of life during the second period rattling off seven shots to none for the visitors but could not find a goal.
The Ospreys knotted the game on a
Madison Dancisin (Little Egg Harbor/Pinelands) tally five minutes into the third period. The junior deflected a pass at the far corner from
Jennelle Long (Matawan/Matawan) for the 1-1 tie.
Kassidy Wentzell (Hammonton/St. Joseph's) gave Stockton the lead a little more than five minutes later. She blasted a shot into the cage off a
Hannah Wescoat (Upper Deerfield/Cumberland) pass for a 2-1 margin.
The lead would not last as the Knights tied the game at the beginning the final frame. A tip in by Adera Ahern knotted the contest at 2-2 with 11 minutes to play.
Emily Gilligan (West Deptford/West Deptford) kept the game tied with a great save with 2:58 to play, setting up Morganti's game winner. The Ospreys started the final sequence on a penalty corner. Wentzell fired a shot that was kicked out, but Morganti pounced on the rebound and deposited it into the cage for the 3-2 lead. The Ospreys then ran out the clock and claimed the tight one goal victory.
Stockton dominated the score sheet, outshooting the Knights 20-5 and held a 14-9 advantage on penalty corners for the evening. Gilligan made two saves with
Lauryn Flynn (Warren Grove/Southern Regional) being credited with a defensive save.
For the Knights, Ashton Evans started in net making two saves in 40:42 before giving way to Gracie Fenner. Fenner finished up the game kicking out three shots. Ahern also had a defensive save to go with her goal on the night.
Stockton has a quick turnaround as the Ospreys will face Albright tomorrow in Reading, PA. Game time is set for 12 noon.
