Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University (1-0) got the 2019-20 season off to a fabulous start with a 9-0 shutout of Camden County College (0-1) at the Stockton courts on Friday morning.
Two doubles teams won by 8-1 scores. They were
Brenna Samuels (Salem/Salem) and
Brooke Samuels (Salem/Salem) at No. 2 doubles and
Hailey Johnson (Middletown/Academy of Law & Public Safety) and
Sarah Richardson (Atco/Hammonton) at No. 3 doubles.
At No. 1 doubles, freshmen
Elena Nunez (Madrid, Spain/Rye (N.Y.) and
Audrey van Schalkwyk (Haddon Hts./Paul VI) held a slim 4-3 edge but then pulled away for a 8-4 victory to complete the doubles sweep for the Ospreys.
Richardson and
Katelyn Emick (West Deptford/West Deptford) posted 6-0, 6-0 shutouts at No. 5 and No. 6 singles respectively.
Brenna Samuels extended her singles winning streak to 17 straight dating back to last year with a 6-0, 6-3 victory in the No. 3 spot while twin sister
Brooke Samuels won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.
Nunez and van Schalkwyk continued their impressive college debuts with their first career singles wins. Nunez rolled 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and van Schalkwyk notched a 6-2, 6-1 triumph at No. 2 singles.
Stockton will be back in action tomorrow for a home match against Rutgers-Camden at noon.
