Cortland, N.Y. – Stockton University (4-0) began the 2019 season by winning all four of their matches at the Cortland Red Dragon Classic. The Ospreys started with a pair of 3-2 wins over Cortland and Rochester on Friday night. They added a 3-1 victory over Oneonta and a 3-0 sweep of Nazareth on Saturday.
After missing last season due to injury,
Sarah Walsh (Flemington/Hunterdon Central) made a tremendous return with a team-high 63 kills in the four matches. Walsh was named to the All-Tournament Team for her play.
Stockton rallied from a two-set deficit to edge Cortland in the opener, taking the final three frames 25-20, 26-24, 15-10. Walsh pounded 19 kills and
Haley Green (Springville, Utah/Maple Mountain) tied her career high with 13 kills.
Natalie Miller (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) scooped a career-high 39 digs in the match.
The Ospreys again dropped the first two sets against Rochester. They roared back 25-17, 25-17 to force a fifth set and then edged the Yellowjackets 17-15 to take the match. Walsh spiked 19 kills followed by
Emily Sullivan (Bridgewater/Bridgewater-Raritan) and
Julie Kohlhoff (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) with 12 kills apiece.
Grace Brandt (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park) paced the back row with a career-high 24 digs.
Walsh led the way again in the win over Oneonta, this time with 12 kills while Green added 10 spikes. Sullivan dished 48 assists and snagged 15 digs. Brandt and Miller finished with 18 digs apiece. Stockton won the first two sets 29-27 and 25-22, dropped the third stanza 25-21 but dominated the fourth set 25-10.
The Ospreys capped the 4-0 weekend by cruising to a 25-12, 25-17, 25-14 sweep of Nazareth in which 14 players saw action on the court. Walsh tallied a team-high 13 kills while Sullivan dealt 20 assists. Miller registered a team-high 13 digs.
Stockton will have a week off before playing three matches at NYU on September 6-7.
