Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (2-1) scored a goal in the 72nd minute to upset #17 Franklin & Marshall (1-1) by a 1-0 score on Wednesday night.
Ervin Gjeli (Hasbrouck Heights/Hasbrouck Heights) scored on a header off a
Max Bond (Cherry Hill/Cherry Hill West) cross for the game-winning tally. The Diplomats are nationally ranked by the United Soccer Coaches poll.
The Diplomats carried much of the play during the first 45 minutes, as they held a 7-1 advantage on shots. Stockton's defense was taut throughout the game as they held the nationally-ranked visitors to just two shots on goal that were kicked away.
The Ospreys started to gain some momentum in the second half, getting four early attempts off but none on net. The game-winner came at 71:57 when Bond gained control at the near side of the field in Diplomats' territory. His crossing pass found Gjeli, whose header hit the upper right corner for his first goal of the season.
The Osprey defense clamped down from there, not allowing the Diplomats to score the tying goal. F&M squeezed off two shots on goal in the last 15 minutes that Stockton goalkeeper
Dino Gromitsaris (Bordentown/Bordentown) kept out the net. The visitors had one last shot at knotting the game as time ran out, but a volley by Kane Feudtner sailed over the goal as the contest ended.
Gromitsaris made six saves in posting his first shutout of the season and second in his career. Christopher Amoruso did not make a save for Franklin & Marshall in goal. The Diplomats held a 14-5 advantage on shots and a 10-5 margin on corner kicks.
Stockton will travel to Saratoga Springs, NY this weekend to play in the Skidmore Classic on Saturday and Sunday. The Ospreys will face Oswego State at noon on Saturday in their first game.
