Stockton Extends NJAC Lead With 80-68 Victory

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (11-5, 8-1 NJAC) won their third game in the last four outings with an 80-68 win over Montclair State (8-8, 6-3 NJAC) on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Ospreys extended their lead in the NJAC to two games. The Ospreys forced 19 turnovers that turned into 24 points in the game and held the Red Hawks to 31.8 percent (21-66) shooting on the afternoon.
 
Freshman DJ Campbell (Vineland/Vineland) set a new career high with 25 points to top the Ospreys. Fellow frosh Jordan Williams (Trenton/Trenton Central) posted his first career double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, both career-high marks.
 
The squads played tough defense against each other in the first half. Stockton held an 18-15 lead at 11:49 before the Red Hawks gained a five-point advantage on an 8-0 run in the span of 27 seconds for a 23-18 margin.
 
Stockton answered with a 12-2 spurt to take the lead for good at 30-25 with 8:30 remaining in the half. The teams settled i,n trading baskets before the Ospreys took control at 45-39 at the half. Williams tallied 12 of his points to lead all scorers at the break.
 
The defensive theme continued in the second half, with Othniel Nyamekye (Irvington/Irvington) scoring the first points for either team at 17:24. Stockton slowly increased the advantage to as many as 16 for a 60-44 lead with 9:44 remaining in regulation as Campbell started to find the range from outside .
 
The visitors showed some fight as the Red Hawks climbed back and sliced the lead to 74-68 with 1:16 left in the game, but a Kadian Dawkins (Eastampton/Rancocas Valley) basket, two foul shots by Williams and a clinching dunk by Jordan Taylor (East Orange/Cicely Tyson) closed out the contest 80-68 in favor of Stockton.
 
Campbell shot a blistering 9-12 (75%) from the floor that included 5-7 (.714) from behind the arc. Williams also hit 2-3 from the three-point line and 5-9 (55.5%) overall. Kyion Flanders (Wildwood/Wildwood) rounded out the Osprey high scorers with 10 points, pulled down a career-best seven rebounds and dished four assists. Taylor led all players with five helpers, with Dawkins adding four more assists.
 
Akbar Hoffman topped four Red Hawks in double figures with 14 points. Justin Porter added 12 markers while Steven Breeman and Dearius Brown chipped in with 11 points each. Breeman grabbed 10 boards for Montclair State.
 
Stockton will take on The College of New Jersey on Wednesday night for their next contest. Game time is set for 8 pm at The Sports Center.
