Stockton Felled by Late Surge, 64-48

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (7-10, 2-8 NJAC) fell to a second-half surge by The College of New Jersey (11-6, 8-2 NJAC) and dropped a 64-48 contest on Wednesday night. Kiley Gelston (Washington Twp./Washington Twp.) led the Ospreys with a team-high 11 points as the only player in double figures on the night.

The Lions started strong, running out to a 9-0 lead before freshman Ionyonia Alves (Mays Landing/Oakcrest) scored the Ospreys' first basket of the night. Chyna Wooten (Philadelphia, PA/Imhotep Charter) hit a three-pointer, then Lajerah Wright added two more to close the lead to 11-7 before TCNJ ended the quarter leading 12-11.

The Ospreys opened the second period on a 7-0 run, with Wright and Gelston scoring baskets and Maddie McCracken (Wildwood/Wildwood) hitting a three-ball for a 18-12 Stockton advantage with 6:56 left in the half. The Ospreys finished the half with a slim 22-21 lead, led by Wright with six markers and McCracken with five.

The pace quickened in the third frame. Stockton stretched the margin to 34-27 with 4:39 remaining before the Lions started their sprint to the finish. TCNJ ended the quarter on a 14-7 run to knot the game at 41-41 heading into the final period of play.

The spurt continued for the visitors as TCNJ scored the first 10 points of the fourth quarter to take a commanding 51-41 lead at 6:29. Alves again stopped the run but to no avail. McCracken hit another three-ball to make it 55-46 with just over two minutes left, but that was as close as Stockton would come in the 64-48 win for TCNJ.

Alves led all players with a career-high 11 rebounds to go with eight points as Stockton held a 46-38 advantage on the glass. Wright and McCracken also tallied eight points each, with Wright and Armanee DeBarry (Millville/Millville) pulling down seven rebounds each. Emily Donzanti (Toms River/Toms River South) and Hailee Porricelli (Howell/Freehold Twp.) tied for game high with three assists apiece.

Rachel Gazzola topped four Lions in double figures with 18 points and three steals. Jen Byrne and Shannon Devitt added 14 markers each with Elie Cimilluca chipping in with 10 points and three helpers.

Stockton will travel to Mahwah, NJ for their next tilt against Ramapo College on Saturday afternoon. Game time is set for 3 pm.
