Elizabethtown, PA – Stockton University (4-0) used a dominant third period and held on for a tight 14-12 victory over Elizabethtown (2-2) on Saturday afternoon.
Luc Swedlund (Randolph/Randolph) and
Eric Ellis (Voorhees/Eastern) led the Ospreys with four goals each. The win gave Stockton a four match winning streak to start the season.
Stockton came out of the gate quickly potting five of the first six goals in the first 9:44 of the game. Swedlund hit the back of the net twice in the period, the first coming just 58 seconds into the contest on a man-up goal.
He was followed by
Peter Burke (Shamong/Seneca) and a pair by
Eric Ellis (Voorhees/Eastern) for a 5-1 lead. The Blue Jays tallied one before
J.J. McKenna (Barnegat/Barnegat) made it a four-goal advantage again at 6-2. The home team would score twice more to slice the margin to 6-4 after one period.
That pushed off a streak of five consecutive tallies as Elizabethtown hit the net for the first three scores of the second frame and a 7-6 lead. Ellis stopped the run with his third of the day from
Eric D'Arminio (Roxbury/Roxbury), to knot the game at 7-7 with 8:41 remaining in the half.
Swedlund scored his third of the day from
Dante Poli (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks South), but the Blue Jays tied the game up with another goal to make it 8-8 at the break. The Ospreys held a 24-16 advantage on shots, including 19-11 on net for the first 30 minutes of play.
The Ospreys looked to take control of the game in a dominant third quarter. Stockton outshot the Blue Jays 14-2 and 12-2 on net as they popped in four goals for a 12-9 lead after three. Poli scored three times in a span of 2:25 that gave Stockton the lead. Two of his tallies were man-up scores, with one assisted by
Patrick Dunleavy (Medford/Bishop Eustace).
Elizabethtown made it 11-9 before Swedlund scored his fourth of the day, with a helper from
Sean Haddock (Hightstown/Hightstown) for a 12-9 margin.
Ellis garnered his fourth of the day at the start of the fourth period with 12:48 remaining, that turned out to be the eventual game winner. The home team tallied twice in a 41 second span to slice the margin to 13-11 with 9:23 left in regulation.
After a Stockton timeout,
Joey Tiernan (Voorhees/Eastern) gave the Ospreys the three-goal cushion once again at 5:55. Elizabethtown tallied one more goal in the final 1:27 but time ran out and Stockton came away with the 14-12 victory.
In addition to the four-goal scorers, Poli totaled five points on three goals and two assists. Stockton finished with a 47-28 advantage on shots with 32 being on net.
Logan Holleritter (Oak Ridge/Jefferson Twp.) led the defense with nine ground balls, with
Max Pukenas (Medford/Shawnee) causing four turnovers. Goalkeeper
Justin Ruiz (Holmdel/Holmdel) made six saves in net in the win.
Micha Ballew topped the Blue Jays with three goals, while netminder Tom Mahoney kicked out 18 Stockton shots in the loss.
Stockton will have a week off before they face off against Washington College (MD) next Saturday. The home tilt is scheduled for noon.
