Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (6-3) fell twice to New York University (3-1) by scores of 12-1 and 12-10 on Sunday afternoon.
Rico Viani (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) Â led a balanced attack with three hits, two RBI and a run scored on the day.
Â
NYU jumped out early on the Ospreys in game one, as the Violets scored four runs in the each of the first two innings for a commanding 8-0 lead. Stockton was held hitless through the first three frames, finally breaking through for three hits and a run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Â
Viani and
John Perrino (Wall/Wall) singled with Viani advancing to third base. Â
Evan Geisler (Lodi/Lodi) lifted a sacrifice fly to plate Viani for the Ospreys' only run of the game. The visitors tacked on four more runs for the 12-1 victory. Gabe Golob was dominant for NYU tossing 7.2 innings and fanning 12 Ospreys.
Â
Stockton fell behind 5-0 through four innings in game two, before mounting a comeback. The Ospreys scored three runs on just two hits to slice the margin to 5-3. RBI by Viani and
Ryan Swift (Sewell/Washington Twp.), plus a wild pitch gave Stockton the trio of scores.
Â
The Ospreys knotted the game in the bottom half of the seventh when Viani and Perrino singled and Geisler walked loading the bases. An error and a
Garrett DeMarrais (Oradell/River Dell) sacrifice fly tied the game at 5-5.
Â
The Violets then scored four runs in the eight and three more in the ninth for a 12-5 advantage, but Stockton had one last push in them. In the last inning, Stockton plated five ruins in a furious attempt at the win.
Â
The Ospreys loaded the bases on a Geisler hit and two walks with no outs. Pinch hitter
Jay Marchese (East Brunswick/East Brunswick) knocked in a pair with a single, before
Ryan O'Sullivan (Lacey Twp./Donovan Catholic) singled to re-load the sacks.
Â
A pair of groundouts scored two more runs, then Viani doubled home another to slice the lead to 12-10. Unfortunately, that was as close as the Ospreys would come in the two-run defeat.
Â
Perrino also had three hits on the day, with
Marco Meleo (Freehold/Freehold Boro) and Geisler also rapping two hits. Geisler scored twice and drove in a run. Marchese and Swift joined Viani with two RBI each. Viani has hit safely in all seven games he has played in the field.
Â
Stockton will play their fourth of five straight home games tomorrow, when the Ospreys will face the College of Saint Elizabeth. First pitch is set for 3:30pm.
