Montclair, N.J. – Stockton University (9-13, 4-2 NJAC) split the first two sets but then dropped the next two for a 3-1 setback to Montclair State (13-7, 5-1) in a showdown for second place in the NJAC. The set scores were 25-23, 18-25, 25-16, 25-15 in favor of the Red Hawks.
Charlotte Leon (Northport, N.Y./Northport) paced the Ospreys with a match-high 16 kills and
Caity Ullmer (Midland Park/Midland Park) tied her career high with 15 kills to go with a team-best .324 hitting percentage.
Aubrey Rentzel (York, Pa./Central York) handed out 21 assists followed by
Alice Brandt (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park) with 17 helpers.
Sophia Marziello (Haddonfield/Paul VI) topped the back row with 14 digs.
Stockton led the first set 23-21 after a kill by Leon but surrendered the next four points to fall 25-23. In the second set, a kill by Leon and an ace from Rentzel highlighted a 5-0 spurt that gave the Ospreys a 23-17 lead on the way to evening the match 25-18.
Stockton fell behind 9-2 in the third set and never recovered as Montclair State seized control of the match 25-16. The fourth stanza followed a similar pattern as the Red Hawks broke out to a 9-4 lead from which the Ospreys were unable to rally as the match ended with a 25-15 result.
Stockton will head north again on Thursday for a non-conference match at Drew University that begins at 7 p.m.
