Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University (7-5, 0-3 NJAC) played its second straight overtime game but came out on the short end this time as the Ospreys fell to William Paterson (8-5, 1-2) by a 2-1 count in double OT. Freshman
Alexandria Palumbo (Mantua/Clearview) scored for the third straight game.
Stockton held advantages of 20-7 in shots and 22-1 in penalty corners but was unable to capitalize on those opportunities for more than one goal. Palumbo fired a team-high five shots followed by fellow rookie
Autumn Hunter (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) with four.
Kelsie Murphy scored for William Paterson just 3:50 into the game on what would be the Pioneers' only shot in the first three periods.
Gianna Morganti (Berlin/St. Joseph) had a scoring chance in the third quarter that was denied by WPU back Gina Piscitelli with a defensive save.
The Ospreys finally got the tying goal with 8:02 remaining in regulation as Palumbo scored her sixth marker of the season and fourth in the last six games with an assist by Morganti on a penalty corner. Stockton nearly won the game with just over a minute to play as
Rhian Freire (Mays Landing/Cedar Creek) fired a shot off the post.
The teams combined for three shots in the first overtime, with goaltenders
Kylie Mitchell (Shamong/Seneca) and Emily Hoagland each making one save. After an early shot wide by Palumbo in the second OT, Megan Hoopes scored for the Pioneers on a breakaway 1:41 into the second extra period to deal Stockton the 2-1 setback.
Mitchell made three saves for Stockton while Hoagland earned the win with four stops for William Paterson.
Stockton will face its second ranked team on the season when the Ospreys visit #6 Rowan University on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
