Stockton Plays to Scoreless Draw With Rutgers-Newark

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (8-6-2, 4-2-1) played a tough match with Rutgers-Newark (10-3-3, 4-0-3) and came away with a 0-0 draw on Saturday afternoon. Dino Gromitsaris (Bordentown/Bordentown) made one save for his sixth clean sheet this season. The shutout also was the 16th of his career to move into a tie for fifth place in Stockton history.

The Ospreys held a slim 5-4 advantage in shots in the first half with two being on net. Owen Kitch (Medford/St. Augustine Prep) had a header on a corner kick knocked away at 2:13. Gromitsaris made his only save in the 30th minute when he punched a shot by Juwan Ash over the top of the net to keep the match scoreless.

Antonio Matos (Hammonton/St. Augustine Prep) fired an attempt two minutes later that was headed for the lower left corner, but that was kicked out as well and the game went to the break 0-0.

The Scarlet Raiders dominated the first part of the second stanza, firing a pair of shots wide in the 58th minute of play. Freshman Joseph Carbone (Pequannock/Pequannock) posted an attempt that was saved by Raiders goalkeeper Andres Medina at 68:10.

Michael Echeverria (Linden/St. Joseph) had the best opportunity for either squad at 79:44. He took a pass from Ervin Gjeli (Hasbrouck Heights/Hasbrouck Heights) in the box, but his bicycle kick attempt banged off the right post and away from the goal.

Stockton had two shots in the first overtime to one by the visitors but none on net. Gjeli had the last shot for Stockton in the second extra frame but his header off a corner kick sailed high with 7:12 remaining in the match ended in the 0-0 draw.

Gromitsaris made one save in the whitewash while Medina kicked out three shots for his fifth shutout of the season for Rutgers-Newark.

Stockton's next match will be a non-conference affair, when the Ospreys will travel to Salisbury, MD to face Salisbury University on Wednesday afternoon. Kick-off is set for 2 pm.
