Stockton Reaches NJAC Tournament With 2-0 Win

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (9-8-2, 5-3-1) earned a much-needed victory, with a 2-0 whitewash over The College of New Jersey (8-9-1, 4-4-1 NJAC) on Wednesday night. Freshman Joseph Carbone (Pequannock/Pequannock) scored both goals to help propel the Ospreys into the NJAC Tournament starting on Saturday.

The first half was a scoreless affair, with Stockton pushing the action for most of the frame. The Ospreys had four shots in the period with three on net but came away empty. Carbone, Sebi Morrello (North Caldwell/West Essex) and Peter Kozlej (Toms River/Toms River East) all had great opportunities but were turned away by TCNJ net minder Julian Franco.

Stockton turned up the pressure even more to begin the final stanza, getting three consecutive corner kicks and keeping the Lions bottled up. Morrello, in the 43rd minute, and Kozlej a minute later, each fired a shot with no luck.

Carbone then scored the eventual game winner at 52:24. The rookie was sent in by Kozlej and his shot to the top right corner gave the Ospreys a 1-0 lead. Carbone finished off the victory with five seconds remaining when he got around Franco on a breakaway and tallied his ninth goal of the season, ending the match at 2-0.

The Ospreys defense was solid allowing just four shots on the night and only one on net, helping goalkeeper Dino Gromitsaris (Bordentown/Bordentown) to his league-leading seventh shutout of the season. Gromitsaris made one save and moved into sole possession of fifth place in Stockton history with 17 career clean sheets.

Stockton will be the number five seed in the NJAC Tournament starting on Saturday. The Ospreys will travel to Glassboro to face number four Rowan University. Time of the match to be determined.
