Stockton Upends Montclair State 1-0

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (10-2-2, 4-0-1 NJAC) remained unblemished in NJAC play with a tough 1-0 victory over visiting Montclair State (7-4-0, 3-2-0 NJAC) on Saturday afternoon. Jessica Heitmann (Rockaway/Morris Hills) tallied a marker for the second straight game, that was the game winning goal.

The teams fought for every inch during a taut first half, with the Red Hawks holding a slim 6-5 margin in shots. Both squads were able to put three shots each on net but came away scoreless after the initial 45 minutes of play.

Stockton was able to finally get on the board, 3:25 into the second stanza. Heitmann gathered the ball near the top of the box, spun to get free and fired a volley to the upper left corner for the score. Her fourth goal of the season gave Stockton a 1-0 advantage.

Montclair State then upped the pressure, trying for the equalizer, but Stockton's defense was up to the task. The visitors swarmed the Osprey net with a trio of near misses late in the contest.

In the 86th minute, Kylee Sullivan (Jackson/Jackson Memorial) turned away a shot aimed for the low left corner, the Red Hawks then clanged an attempt off the crossbar with 1:19 left in the match. Eight seconds later, Sullivan again turned away another attempt as Stockton then ran out the clock, making Heitmann's goal the game winner.

Sullivan turned away six shots in garnering her fifth shutout of the season and eighth of her career. The senior also lowered her goals against average to a miniscule 0.82.

Haley Martin started in net for the Red Hawks and made three saves in the first half. Lindsay Freewalt played the second 45 minutes without making a save.

Stockton will finish up their three-game homestand on Wednesday night, when the Ospreys will face Rowan University. Match time is scheduled for 7 pm in Galloway.
