Chester, Pa. – Stockton University (1-0) opened the 2021-22 season with an 82-71 victory over Arcadia University (0-3) in the first game of the Widener Tip-Off Tournament.
Luciano Lubrano (Ocean City/Ocean City) led three Ospreys in double figures with a game-high 23 points.
Lubrano shot 10-15 (66.7%) from the field including 3-5 (60%) from three-point range. He also grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
DJ Campbell (Vineland/Vineland) tossed in 20 points followed by
Nick Duncsak (Toms River/TR North) with 10 markers.
Stockton forced 21 turnovers and converted them into 31 points while committing just nine miscues at the offensive end. The Ospreys also scored 52 points in the paint and shot 9-10 (90%) at the free throw line.
Stockton used a 17-3 run during the first half to turn a 17-15 deficit into a 32-20 lead. Lubrano and Campbell led the charge with five points apiece. Arcadia then outscored the Ospreys 15-6 over the last five minutes of the half to trim Stockton's advantage to 38-35 at the break.
Campbell shot a torrid 6-9 (66.7%) from the floor for 13 first-half points followed by Lubrano with 10 as the duo carried the Stockton offense.
In the second half, the Ospreys built the lead back up to 12 at 57-45 but once again Arcadia fought back, tying the contest 59-59 with 9:10 to play. Lubrano answered with a layup and Duncsak followed with a three-pointer as Stockton took the lead for good.
The Ospreys later sealed the outcome by scoring eight consecutive points down the stretch before a late Arcadia basket set the final at 82-71 in Stockton's favor. The Ospreys went 4-8 (50%) from three-point land and a perfect 6-6 at the line in the second half.
Jalen Watkins paced Arcadia with 18 points and eight rebounds followed by Samuel Majekodunmi with 14 counters.
Stockton will face either Widener or Neumann in the championship game of the Widener Tip-Off Tournament tomorrow at 4 p.m.
