Stockton Advances in NJAC Tournament 3-0

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (16-16) used a balanced attack offensively and defensively to down William Paterson (13-11) by scores of 25-11, 25-18 and 25-10 on Tuesday night. With the victory, Stockton advanced to the semifinals of the NJAC Tournament on Thursday night and extended its winning streak to four straight matches.

Emma Capriglione (Tuckerton/Pinelands) smacked a team-high 11 kills, with Charlotte Leon (Northport, NY/Northport) and Haley Green (Springville, UT/Maple Mountain) spiking 10 kills each.

Molly Eng (New Providence/New Providence) got the Ospreys rolling in the first set, serving six consecutive points for a 6-0 margin, forcing the Pioneers into a timeout. The stoppage allowed William Paterson to regroup and later score five straight points to close within 17-10, but an 8-1 closing finish by the home squad ended the first stanza with the 25-11 win.

The second set was closer as the visitors fought their way to within two points on three different occasions. With the score 19-17 in favor of Stockton, two kills by Capriglione, one by freshman Jaylah Rolle (Williamstown/Williamstown) and a combined block from Rolle and Capriglione pushed the Ospreys to the 25-18 second-set victory.

The third and final frame became academic as Green exploded for six kills to lead the Ospreys to the three-set sweep. Stockton had a hitting percentage of .417 in the final set.

Defensively, the Ospreys were solid with Sophia Marziello (Haddonfield/Paul VI) leading three Ospreys in double-digit digs with 14. Eng and Alice Brandt (Floral Park, NY/Floral Park) scooped 10 digs each, with Eng serving a match-high four aces.

Aubrey Rentzel (York, PA/Central York) dished a match-high 33 assists, with freshman Teleyah Witherspoon (Hackensack/Hackensack) adding three blocks.

Stockton, the No. 3 seed, will travel to second-seeded Montclair State on Thursday night for the NJAC Tournament semifinals. Match time is set for 7 pm.
