Stockton Wins NJAC Opener 53-47

Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University (3-3, 1-0 NJAC) opened conference play with a 53-47 victory over Rutgers-Camden (0-3, 0-1 NJAC) behind a strong third quarter in which the Ospreys outscored the Scarlet Raptors by nine.
 
Freshman Madison LaRosa (Oceanport/Shore Regional), the reigning NJAC Rookie of the Week, scored a team-high 20 points, reaching the 20-point plateau for the third straight game and fourth in the last five. Emma Morrone (Maywood/Hackensack) netted 10 points and grabbed a game-high four steals.
 
Grace Sacco (Ocean City/Ocean City) contributed 10 markers, four steals and three assists while Ionyonia Alves (Mays Landing/Oakcrest) added nine points and six rebounds. Nalya Hill (Bloomfield/DePaul Catholic) snatched a team-high eight boards for the Ospreys.
 
Sacco and LaRosa each scored three early points to spark Stockton to an 8-1 lead in the opening minutes. Rutgers-Camden then doubled the Ospreys 8-4 in the rest of the first quarter to trim Stockton's lead to 12-9. Morrone topped the Ospreys with six points in the period.
 
The Scarlet Raptors netted the first seven points of the second stanza for a 16-12 edge. Alves helped Stockton rally with two straight buckets and Sacco later capped the half with a jumper for a 22-22 tie at the break.
 
The third quarter proved decisive as the Ospreys forced 10 turnovers and outscored Rutgers-Camden 21-12. With the score tied 30-30, Sacco drained a three-pointer that ignited an 11-2 run during which Alves tallied five straight points to make it 41-32. After two free throws by Rahzirah Blocker, Sacco again sank a late jumper to give Stockton a 43-34 lead after three.
 
The Ospreys held off Rutgers-Camden in the fourth quarter, leading by six until the final minute. The Scarlet Raptors crept within 49-45 with 53 seconds left but LaRosa answered with a jumper to make it 51-45. After a basket by Blocker again made it a four-point game with 14 ticks left, LaRosa sank two free throws to seal the 53-47 victory.
 
Blocker finished with 20 points to top Rutgers-Camden to tie LaRosa for game-high honors. Jalissa Pitts totaled 14 points and nine rebounds for the Scarlet Raptors while Salina Jones grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
 
Stockton will take the court again in eight days, traveling to Rowan University on December 1 for an NJAC game that tips off at 5:30 p.m.
