Stockton Falls to Rochester 72-65 for First Loss of the Season

Rochester, NY – Stockton University (4-1, 1-0 NJAC) dropped their first game of the season, as host Rochester (5-2) took a 72-65 decision on Saturday afternoon. DJ Campbell (Vineland/Vineland) topped all scorers on the day with a game-high 19 points for Stockton in the opening game of the Holiday Inn Rochester Tournament.

The Ospreys played tough all game but could not overcome shooting woes for the first time this year. Stockton came into the contest averaging 92.0 points per game, 51.6% from the field and 44.6 % from behind the arc but struggled all afternoon to find the mark.

The Ospreys battled back from seven points down to close the gap before half. A pair of three pointers by Luciano Lubrano (Ocean City/Ocean City) and a layup by Kyion Flanders (Wildwood/Wildwood) gave Stockton their first lead of the game with eight seconds remaining in the first stanza at 36-34. But a three ball by the Yellowjackets gave the home team a slim 37-36 margin at the break.

Kadian Dawkins (Eastampton/Rancocas Valley) opened the second half with a floater to give Stockton the lead back at 38-37 but it would be the last time the Ospreys would be in front. Rochester ran off nine straight points in a three-and-a-half-minute span to take the lead for good at 52-46.

The closest the Ospreys would get would be an Alan Glover (Plymouth Meeting/Plymouth Whitemarsh) foul shot with 11:13 left to slice the margin to 52-47. The Yellowjackets were able to hold Stockton at bay the rest of the contest in the 72-65 victory.

Stockton struggled offensively shooting just 24-71 (33.8%) from the field, including 5-22 (22.7%) from the three-point line. Defensively Stockton was solid, forcing 25 turnovers that led to 25 points in the game.

In addition to his 19 points, Campbell dished a team-high three assists and pilfered five steals. Lubrano scored 14 points and tied Campbell, Glover and Nick Duncsak (Toms River/Toms River North) with five boards each. Dawkins scored 11 points and grabbed a career-high seven steals, as Stockton swiped 18 steals on the day.

Mitchell Kershner scored a career-high 16 points for Rochester with teammate C. J. Anselm tallying 10 markers. Trent Noordsij and T.C. Price grabbed a game-high eight rebounds each with Noordsij and Ross Gang dishing four assists each.

Stockton will face off against either Olivet or Elmira on Sunday at 1pm in the Consolation game of the Tournament.
