Jersey City, N.J. – Stockton University (0-3) began the second weekend of back-to-back NJAC games with a 70-56 defeat in a road game at New Jersey City (3-0).
Maddie McCracken topped the Ospreys with 16 points, tying her career high, and added six rebounds.
Ionyonia Alves (Mays Landing/Oakcrest) posted a double-double of 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Emily Donzanti (Toms River/TR South) contributed 11 points, five assists and two steals.
Stockton fell behind 13-7 before reeling off nine straight points to pull ahead 16-13. Alves led the rally with two baskets. The Gothic Knights responded with the last three points of the opening period for a 16-16 tie.
After the contest was tied twice more in the first 4:33 of the second quarter, Stockton went cold and was outscored 16-6 the rest of the period. The Ospreys went without a field goal in the last 5:56 of the stanza, netting six points at the line on the way to a 36-26 deficit at the break.
Stockton was unable to make up any ground in the third stanza, shooting just 2-12 (16.7%) from the field. The margin reached 16 before settling at 51-38 in favor of NJCU after three. Donzanti tossed in seven of the Ospreys' 12 points in the quarter.
In the fourth frame, Stockton crept within 53-42 on two early baskets by
Aiya Underwood (Highland Park/Highland Park). The Ospreys closed the gap to 11 again on a McCracken three-pointer with 2:55 remaining, but they could not get any closer and fell 70-56.
Damaris Rodriguez and Dayjah Anderson led New Jersey City with 17 points apiece followed by Zianna Goda with 16 markers.
Stockton and New Jersey City will square off again tomorrow, with the Ospreys hosting the matchup at 4 p.m.
