Stockton Drops Season Opener

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (0-1, 0-1 NJAC) could not hold off the hot shooting from The College of New Jersey (1-0, 1-0 NJAC) and fell 89-81 in the season opener on Friday night. Sophomore DJ Campbell (Vineland/Vineland) led the Ospreys with a career-high 28 points. The men's and women's games were the first in any sport for Stockton in 330 days.

The Lions started fast by scoring the first nine points and never looked back, taking the game in wire-to-wire fashion. The closest the Ospreys came was 27-25 with 7:42 left in the first half before the Lions nailed two straight three-pointers to put them back in a comfortable lead. The visitors finished the half hitting 52.4 percent (11-21) from behind the arc for a 51-38 halftime advantage.

The second stanza saw TCNJ increase their lead to 17 before Stockton slowly gained some traction. The Ospreys sliced into the margin in a five-minute span to get within 62-56 at the 12:22 mark.

Seven markers from Campbell, four from Alan Glover (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh) and a pair of foul shots plus an assist from Rynell Lawrence (Millville/Millville) accounted for the spurt. TCNJ responded by outscoring the Ospreys 17-9 over the next seven minutes and pulled away to seal the 89-81 victory

Campbell led all scorers with his career night and had three steals while Lawrence also scored a career high with 15 points. The sophomore also pilfered two steals and dished three assists. Glover, a transfer, added career highs of 13 points and seven rebounds, also a team high, in his first game at Stockton. Freshman Jamar Johnson (Penns Grove/Penns Grove) topped Stockton with four assists in his collegiate debut.

TCNJ was led by Jason Larranaga with 21 points while teammate Travis Jocelyn added 20 points, a game-high nine boards and three steals. P.J. Ringel chipped in with 13 points and a game-high six helpers.

Stockton will finish the home and home series tomorrow, traveling to Ewing, NJ to face TCNJ again. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
