Trenton, N.J. – Stockton University (0-2) played a good first half but ultimately was overtaken by The College of New Jersey (2-0) and fell to the Lions 84-75. Five Ospreys scored in double figures in the game, led by
Luciano Lubrano (Ocean City/Ocean City) with career highs of 15 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double.
DJ Campbell (Vineland/Vineland) tossed in 14 points followed by
Rynell Lawrence (Millville/Millville) with 13 markers.
Nick Duncsak (Toms River/TR North) registered career highs with 11 points and eight rebounds. Freshman
Jamar Johnson (Pens Grove/Penns Grove) hit double figures for the first time in his young career with 10 points in his second college game.
Stockton fell behind 19-9 before Lawrence reeled off nine straight points of his own to pull the Ospreys within 19-18. Later trailing 28-20, Stockton closed the half with a 17-7 advantage over the last six minutes for a 37-35 edge at the break. Duncsak led the charge with nine of the 17 points, including a three-pointer in the closing seconds that put the Ospreys up by two.
Stockton shot 51.9 percent from the floor (14-27) and outrebounded the Lions 23-13 in the first half. Lawrence and Duncsak carried the offense with all of their 13 and 11 points respectively before the break as the duo accounted for 24 of the Ospreys' 37 points.
The Ospreys were unable to maintain their offensive efficiency in the second half, shooting just 31.3 percent from the floor (10-32), including 4-15 (26.7%) from three-point range. Although they struggled from the field, Stockton did make 14-19 (73.7%) at the line in the second half.
The score was tied three times in the first three minutes of the period before TCNJ ran off seven consecutive points to take the lead for good at 49-42. Johnson later spurred a 9-0 run that closed an 11-point gap to two at 66-64 with 7:29 to play. The Lions answered with an 11-3 run and Stockton never got closer than four the rest of the way, falling 84-75.
Travis Jocelyn poured in 43 points and tied Lubrano for game-high honors with 11 rebounds to lead TCNJ. P.J. Ringel tallied 13 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for the Lions.
Stockton will host New Jersey City on Friday, February 12 in the first of consecutive games against the Gothic Knights next weekend.
