Union, N.J. – Stockton University (0-4) played its second non-conference doubleheader against a fellow NJAC team and fell in both games, 6-2 and 10-0 (5 innings) to #8 Kean University (10-0), which remained unbeaten. The Ospreys were unable to recover from early deficits in each game.
Leadoff batter
Meg Murzello (Maple Shade/Holy Cross) rapped four of Stockton's nine hits on the day, including a double. Murzello also stole two bases and scored a run in the twinbill. She has hit safely in three straight games and is batting .444 through two doubleheaders.
Kean jumped ahead with four runs in the bottom of the first. Two of the runs were unearned as a Stockton error with two outs extended the inning. The Ospreys cut the deficit in half in the third frame as Murzello singled and
Lilly James (Roseland/West Essex) launched a two-run homer to left field.
The Cougars added two runs in the fifth inning, one of which was unearned, for the 6-2 final. Murzello finished 3-4 with a double and a run.
Liani Ortiz (Marlton/Cherokee) also doubled in the game.
Marissa Semeraro (Ridgefield/Ridgefield) pitched five innings, scattering nine hits and fanning two. Three of the six runs against her were unearned.
Kean put the Ospreys in a 5-0 hole in the first inning of game two, with four runs coming on a grand slam by Gabriella Fredette. The Cougars tacked on five more runs in the next three innings and the game was halted after four-and-a-half innings due to the run rule at 10-0.
Murzello had one of Stockton's two hits, stole two bases and was hit by a pitch. Freshman
Stevie Unger (Tower City, Pa./Williams Valley) singled in the fifth inning for her first career hit.
Stockton's scheduled doubleheader at Montclair State on Saturday has been postponed. The Ospreys are scheduled to open NJAC play at The College of New Jersey on Tuesday, April 6 at 3 p.m.
