Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (2-8, 2-4 NJAC) got their first two wins of the season with a doubleheader sweep of Rutgers-Newark (0-6, 0-6 NJAC) by scores of 7-0 and 5-2 on Saturday afternoon.
The Ospreys rapped 23 hits on the day led by
Meg Murzello (Maple Shade/Holy Cross) who banged out six of those hits in nine at bats.
In the opener, Stockton wasted little time in getting on the board. After Murzello singled in the bottom of the first inning, freshman
Jenna Patterson (Mullica Hill/Clearview) blasted an opposite field home run for a 2-0 lead, her second round tripper of the season.
Angie Dunphy (Hainesport/Rancocas Valley) followed that with a single and eventually came around to score to make it 3-0. That was all the runs
Marissa Semeraro (Ridgefield/Ridgefield would need as she dominated in the circle for Stockton.
The Ospreys used three consecutive doubles by Murzello,
Lilly James (Roseland/West Essex) and Patterson to push the lead to 5-0 after four frames. After adding another tally in the sixth frame, it was all Semeraro, who had not allowed a hit until the top of the seventh.
Masha Corbett broke up the no-hit attempt with a single, but the senior induced a game-ending double play ball to garner the one-hit shutout and her first win of the season.
Semeraro struck out two, did not allow a walk and induced 16 ground ball outs in the win.
The nightcap saw Stockton start quickly again. James had an RBI in the first inning, then drove in two more with a double in the second frame to give Stockton a 3-0 lead. The Raiders got one back with a single marker in the top of the sixth, to slice the margin to 3-1.
The Ospreys responded in the bottom of the inning, when
Samantha McErlane (Mt. Ephraim/Audubon) doubled.
Megan McManus (Northfield/Mainland) plated a run, then James added her fourth RBI in the game to push the lead back to 5-1.
Rutgers-Newark added single runs in the final two frames to set the final score at 5-3 in favor of the Ospreys. McErlane posted her first career win at Stockton with six innings, striking out seven and walking just one hitter. Freshman
Stevie Unger (Tower City, PA/Williams Valley) tossed the final inning in relief.
Stockton will have a quick turnaround as they will travel to Montclair State for another doubleheader tomorrow in Montclair, NJ. First pitch is set for 1pm.
