Stockton Falls Twice at William Paterson

Wayne, N.J. – Stockton University (2-12, 2-8 NJAC) began a four-game weekend by dropping two contests at William Paterson (8-6, 7-3 NJAC). The Ospreys were edged 6-5 in eight innings in the opener and 7-4 in the nightcap.

Lilly James (Roseland/West Essex) accounted for nearly half of Stockton's seven hits in game one as she went 3-4 with a double and a run scored. Jenna Patterson (Mullica Hill/Clearview) added a hit and two RBI.

Stockton jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three runs in the third inning. Patterson walked with the bases loaded for her first RBI of the game. Megan McManus (Northfield/Mainland) earned an RBI on a fielder's choice and Angie Dunphy (Hainesport/Rancocas Valley) singled home James.

The Pioneers rallied with four runs in their next two offensive turns to put Stockton down 4-3. Patterson rapped an RBI single in the fifth frame to pull the Ospreys into a 4-4 tie and the game eventually went to extra innings.

Stockton slipped in front 5-4 on a sacrifice fly by Liani Ortiz (Marlton/Cherokee) in the top of the eighth but WPU answered with two runs in the bottom half, winning 6-5 on a walk-off infield single by Jonnalyn McClain.

Starter Samantha McErlane (Mt. Ephraim/Audubon) allowed two runs on five hits with two strikeouts in three innings of work, but she was not involved in the pitching decision.

Dunphy went 2-3 with a double and a run in the nightcap and has hit safely in six of her last seven games. Meg Murzello (Maple Shade/Holy Cross) hit an inside the park home run and Patterson singled, but those were Stockton's only four hits in the game.

After William Paterson scored once in the second inning, Murzello hit a ball to center field in the top of the third and scampered all the way around the bases for an inside the park home run and a 1-1 tie. The Pioneers responded with three runs in the bottom half and two more in the fourth inning to make it 6-1.

Dunphy, Vanessa Tancini (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) and Ortiz all scored unearned runs in the sixth inning but WPU tacked on one more tally in the bottom of the sixth for the 7-4 final.

Stockton will play another NJAC doubleheader on the road tomorrow when the Ospreys visit Montclair State. The first game begins at 1 p.m.
