Stockton Wins Nightcap to Earn Split at Montclair State

Montclair, N.J. – Stockton University (3-13, 3-9 NJAC) earned a split in an NJAC doubleheader with Montclair State (7-5, 6-4 NJAC) by rallying to win the nightcap 5-4 after dropping the first game 9-2. Meg Murzello (Maple Shade/Holy Cross) led the Ospreys with four hits in the twinbill.

Murzello went 2-4 with two stolen bases and a run in the opener. The Red Hawks scored three runs in the first inning and one in the second for a 4-0 score.

The Ospreys produced their only two runs in the third frame as Murzello singled and Jenna Patterson (Mullica Hill/Clearview) blasted a two-run homer. Montclair State scored two runs in the bottom of the third and three more in the sixth for the 9-2 final.

Murzello went 2-3 with a triple, walk, stolen base and a run in the nightcap. Liani Ortiz (Marlton/Cherokee) was 2-3 with a triple, two RBI and a run while Angie Dunphy (Hainesport/Rancocas Valley) rapped two hits.

Ortiz scored the game's first run on an RBI single by Vanessa Tancini (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) in the first inning. Montclair State plated single runs in the second and third frames before Ortiz tripled home Dunphy in the fourth inning for a 2-2 tie.

Montclair State quickly answered with two runs in the bottom half for a 4-2 advantage, setting the stage for Stockton's comeback. Patterson started the rally with an RBI single in the fifth inning that scored Murzello to make it 4-3.

Dunphy scored the tying run on a fielder's choice that earned Ortiz an RBI for a 4-4 tie in the sixth inning. Murzello led off the seventh inning with a triple scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Lilly James (Roseland/West Essex).

The Red Hawks got the tying and winning runs on base with one out in the bottom of the seventh but Stockton pitcher Marissa Semeraro (Ridgefield/Ridgefield) induced a pair of fielder's choices to close the 5-4 triumph.

Semeraro earned the win in relief, tossing 3.1 scoreless innings in which she allowed just two hits. Eight of the Semeraro's 10 outs were groundouts.

Stockton returns home to host Rutgers-Camden in an NJAC doubleheader on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
