Stockton Unable to Hold Off #23 Montclair State, Falls in OT

Montclair, N.J. – Stockton University (2-3, 0-3 NJAC) led by as much as six in the second half but was unable to hold off 23rd-ranked Montclair State (5-0, 3-0 NJAC) and was edged 14-13 in overtime as the undefeated Red Hawks spoiled Stockton's upset bid.
 
Jennifer Toal (Pine Beach/Toms River South) led the Ospreys with four goals and one assist plus three caused turnovers. Casey Shultz (Sewell/Washington Twp.) tallied three goals and two assists for five points.
 
Michelle Pascrell (Howell/Freehold Twp.) finished with three goals and a game-high seven draw controls while Nicole Jandras (Egg Harbor Twp./EHT) produced three goals for the Ospreys.
 
The teams traded goals for the first 14 minutes, with Toal, Pascrell and Shultz scoring for Stockton on the way to a 3-3 tie. The Red Hawks netted two straight for a 5-3 count but the Ospreys answered with a 4-1 run for a slim 7-6 lead at the half. Pascrell scored twice while Toal and Jandras netted one counter apiece during the spurt.
 
Stockton then reeled off five straight goals in the first 11 minutes of the second half for their largest lead at 12-6. Shultz and Toal potted two markers each and Jandras added one. Montclair State then outscored the Ospreys 7-1 in the last 18 minutes, with Jandras getting the only Stockton tally.
 
Megan Malstadt fired in a free-position goal with 19 seconds left to force overtime at 13-13. Toal and Shultz each had one shot on goal in OT, but both were saved by Montclair goalkeeper Lilien Allen. The Red Hawks Brittany Costigan then scored the game-winner with one second left in the first overtime to deny Stockton the upset 14-13.
 
Stockton will play its last two regular season games at home, starting with a matchup against Rowan on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
