Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (7-9, 5-7 NJAC) used a balanced offense to run past Rutgers-Camden (7-11, 6-6 NJAC) by a 15-4 score on Friday afternoon. All nine starters had at least one safety in the 15-hit attack.
Garrett DeMarrais (Oradell/River Dell) and
Ryan Swift (Sewell/Washington Twp.) led the way with three hits each. Although the game was played in Galloway, the Ospreys were the visiting team as the Scarlet Raptors do not have a home field.
Stockton opened the scoring with a three-spot in the top of the second inning.
Sam Nieves (South Plainfield/South Plainfield) doubled and advanced to third on a fly. Swift plated him with a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.
Evan Geisler (Lodi/Lodi) singled before
Nick Trifiletti (Linwood/Mainland) blasted a long homer to dead center for the 3-0 lead.
The Scarlet Raptors answered with a pair of runs in the third frame and a single tally in the fourth for a 3-3 tie after four innings. Stockton blew the game open with a six-run outburst in the top of the fifth inning.
With the bases loaded and one away,
Jay Marchese (East Brunswick/East Brunswick) knocked in two runs with a single. Nieves plated another run with a hit before Swift would drive in a pair with a double. A wild pitch scored the final run of the frame for a 9-3 Osprey lead.
Four more runs in the next stanza put the game out of reach for Stockton. The Ospreys again loaded the bases for Marchese. His sacrifice fly knocked in one run before DeMarrais cleared that sacks with a double and a 13-3 advantage.
The Ospreys would add two more runs to offset a single run by Rutgers-Camden to set the final score at 15-4 in favor of Stockton.
Phil DeMarco (Ocean Twp./Ocean Twp.) navigated his way through seven innings for his first win of the season. He scattered 10 hits and allowed just three runs and induced 12 ground-ball outs.
Trey Fracassini (Midland Park/Midland Park) and
Jason Horowitz (Wall/Wall) tossed an inning each to finish up the contest in relief of DeMarco.
DeMarrais, Marchese, Swift and Trifiletti all had three RBI while Nieves scored four runs in the game that was played in a crisp 2:49.
The Ospreys will play their final home doubleheader of the season tomorrow, when Stockton will face Rutgers-Newark. First pitch for the twinbill is set for 11:30 am.
