Stockton Drops Third Straight

Camden, N.J. – Stockton University (2-3) fell for the third straight time, as SUNY-Cortland (2-1-1) played tough defense in downing the Ospreys 2-0 on Saturday afternoon. It was the first match of the Rutgers-Camden Cialella Soccer Classic hosted by Rutgers-Camden University. Stockton was outshot 8-5 with just one shot on net in the game.

The Red Dragons bookended a pair of goals in the first half, starting at 2:41, when they netted a shot from the box after a corner pass. In between the pair of tallies, Stockton squeezed off three shots, but Sebi Morrello (North Caldwell/West Essex) was the only one to get a shot on net that was kicked away. Cortland potted their second score with 1:06 remaining in the half for the 2-0 lead at the break.

The Ospreys had their best opportunity to get into the scoring column in the 68th minute but to no avail. Brendan Deal (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) fired a shot that clanged off the post. Freshman Joseph Carbone (Pequannock/Pequannock) got off another try in the 81st minute that sailed high.

The Red Dragons increased the pressure getting two attempts late in the contest that Stockton goalkeeper Dino Gromitsaris (Bordentown/Bordentown) was able to keep out of the net. The Red Dragons then closed out the match and took the 2-0 decision.

Gromitsaris made three saves in net for the Ospreys, while his counterpart Braden Melveney kicked out one shot in posting the shutout.

Stockton will play against Catholic University tomorrow in the final day of the Classic. Match time is set for 2pm.
