Stockton Succumbs to Furious Rally by Rowan

Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University (4-10, 2-1 NJAC) won the first two sets but then fell victim to a furious rally by Rowan University (8-3, 2-0) that resulted in a 3-2 setback for the Ospreys. After taking the first two sets 25-21 and 25-16, Stockton was edged 26-24, 29-27, 15-10 in the next three.
 
Charlotte Leon (Northport, N.Y./Northport) led the Ospreys with a team-high 17 kills followed by Emma Capriglione (Tuckerton/Pinelands) with 11 kills. Leon also tallied eight blocks. Aubrey Rentzel (York, Pa./Central York) dealt a career-high 44 assists to go with 17 digs and six kills.
 
Sophia Marziello (Haddonfield/Paul VI) led all players in the match with 25 digs while freshman Jaylah Rolle (Williamstown/Williamstown) established career highs of nine blocks, a match high, and nine kills for the Ospreys.
 
Caity Ullmer (Midland Park/Midland Park) sparked Stockton to a 25-21 win in the first set with five kills and zero errors on eight attacks. The Ospreys raced out to a 7-1 lead in the second set and never looked back on the way to a 25-16 triumph behind a balanced attack led by Leon with three kills.
 
The third frame was close throughout, with no margin greater than four points. Trailing 24-22, Stockton scored two in a row for a 24-24 tie but Rowan answered with two straight points to extend the match 26-24 despite five kills by Leon in the set.
 
The fourth set featured an incredible 16 ties and six lead changes as the teams went back and forth. Stockton had four match points but Rowan fended off each one, eventually tallying three straight markers to force a fifth set with a 29-27 count.
 
Stockton was unable to regain the momentum and fell behind 8-1 in the deciding fifth stanza. The Ospreys rallied to within 13-10 but the comeback ran out of steam and Rowan closed the match with two points to finish off its remarkable rally, 15-10.
 
Brianna Newson paced the Profs with a match-high 18 kills followed by Natalie Ogden with 15 kills plus 15 digs. Brooke Adams dished 52 assists and Simone Sparano scooped 22 digs for Rowan.
 
Stockton will host a tri-match on Saturday, with the Ospreys playing #19 NYU at 11 a.m. and Lycoming at 3 p.m. as those two matches bookend a faceoff between NYU and Lycoming at 1 p.m.
