Stockton Splits in Home Tri-Match

Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University (5-11) split its two contests in a tri-match at The Sports Center. The Ospreys were swept 3-0 by undefeated and 19th-ranked NYU (12-0) but the rebounded to top Lycoming (5-9) 3-1. NYU swept Lycoming 3-0 in the other match.
 
Emma Capriglione (Tuckerton/Pinelands) spiked a team-high nine kills followed by Charlotte Leon (Northport, N.Y./Northport) with seven against NYU. Aubrey Rentzel (York, Pa./Central York) finished with 17 assists, six digs and five aces.
 
Stockton fell behind 14-4 in the first set but later scored eight straight points, three on aces by Rentzel, to pull within 15-13. The Violets doubled the Ospreys 10-5 the rest of way for the 25-20 final. After a 25-12 second set, NYU closed out the match 25-17 despite four kills by Capriglione in the third stanza.
 
Leon powered the offense with 16 kills in the victory over Lycoming. Stockton's pair of freshman middle hitters were key players for the Ospreys. Teleyah Witherspoon (Hackensack/Hackensack) produced a career-high nine kills against just one hitting error.
 
Fellow rookie Jaylah Rolle (Williamstown/Williamstown) tallied eight kills, a match-high five blocks, four digs and two aces. Molly Eng (New Providence/New Providence) paced the back row with a career-high 24 digs while Rentzel contributed 42 assists and 14 digs.
 
Stockton trailed 18-15 in the first set but rallied with a 10-2 run highlighted by three kills from Rolle to win 25-21. Witherspoon was perfect in the second set with three kills on three attacks and Eng served two aces as the Ospreys dominated 25-13.
 
The third set featured 11 ties and eight lead changes before Lycoming fended off a match point at 24-23 by scoring three straight to stay alive 26-24.
 
Early in the fourth frame, Stockton reeled off seven straight points, two on kills by Leon, for an 8-5 lead. The Ospreys stayed in front the rest of the way to seal the victory 25-19.
 
Stockton's next match will be an NJAC tilt at Kean University on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
