Stockton Splits Two Matches to Begin Season

Haverford, Pa. – Stockton University (1-1) began the 2021 season by splitting a pair of matches at the Haverford Invitational. The Ospreys swept Misericordia 3-0 but then fell to host Haverford 3-1. Charlotte Leon (Northport, N.Y./Northport) paced Stockton with a team-high 23 kills on the day.

A pair of sophomores who are stepping into larger roles this season led the team to the sweep of Misericordia. Emma Capriglione (Tuckerton/Pinelands) notched career highs with 11 kills and nine digs while setter Aubrey Rentzel (York, Pa./Central York) dished 30 assists.

Rentzel also tallied five kills and five digs in the sweep. Leon, Caity Ullmer (Midland Park/Midland Park) and freshman Teleyah Witherspoon (Hackensack/Hackensack) each contributed seven kills.

Stockton controlled the first set 25-16, took the second stanza 25-20 and then edged the Cougars 25-22 in the third set to complete the sweep.

Leon tied for match-high honors with 16 kills while Ullmer added 10 kills in the four-set defeat to Haverford. Rentzel dished a career-high 32 assists to go with seven digs and two aces while Sophia Marziello (Haddonfield/Paul VI) paced the back row with a match-high 20 digs.

After dropping the first two sets by 25-18 scores, the Ospreys extended the match by taking the third set 25-19. The rally stalled in the fourth frame as Haverford closed out the match 25-18.

Stockton will play two more matches at the Haverford Invitational tomorrow, facing Stevenson University (Md.) at 10 a.m. and Coast Guard at 12 p.m.
