Union, N.J. – Stockton University (0-1) opened the 2021 season with a 2-1 setback to the University of Scranton (1-0) in overtime at the Kean Cougar Classic. Sophomore
Maddie Klein (Hamilton/Steinert) scored her first career goal for the Ospreys.
Although outshot 30-6, Stockton stayed close behind a career-high 14 saves from goalkeeper
Kylee Sullivan (Jackson/Jackson Memorial). Sullivan made six saves in each half and two more in overtime before the Royals potted the game-winner.
Niahm Healy gave Scranton a 1-0 lead 20:08 into the game. Stockton produced the equalizer with 4:59 remaining in the first half. Klein, who was playing in her first college match after not seeing any action in the six-game Spring 2021 season, netted her first career goal and
Sydney Williams (Millville/Millville) assisted.
Scranton fired 15 shots to just two for the Ospreys in the second half, but Sullivan kept the contest knotted at 1-1 with six saves. The match continued in overtime, where Sullivan made two early stops before Evelyn Bruggeman scored at 95:54 to deal Stockton the 2-1 defeat.
Goalie Amanda Steinberg made three saves for the Royals.
Stockton will face Westfield State (Mass.) tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. in the second of its two games at the Kean Cougar Classic.
