Stockton Falls to NJCU 79-63

Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University (11-3, 6-2 NJAC) produced its season-low for points and fell to New Jersey City (8-7, 5-3 NJAC) 79-63 in the first of two straight home games for the Ospreys. Stockton went a strong 16-21 (76.2%) at the line but just 3-23 (13%) from three-point range.

Kadian Dawkins (Eastampton/Rancocas Valley) tied his career high with 16 points. Dawkins shot 6-10 (60%) from the floor and 4-5 at the line. Jonathan Azoroh (Ewing/Ewing) went 4-5 from the field and 3-4 at the stripe for 11 markers, one off his career high.

DJ Campbell (Vineland/Vineland) also hit double figures with 10 points while Kyion Flanders (Wildwood/Wildwood) contributed team highs of eight rebounds and three assists.

NJCU came out firing as the Gothic Knights hit their first eight shot attempts to put the Ospreys in an early 18-8 hole. A basket by Azoroh later got Stockton within six at 26-20, but they could get no closer. They trailed by as much as 15 in the half before a jumper by Campbell made it 42-29 in favor of the visitors at the break.

Azoroh paced the Ospreys with seven first half points. NJCU shot 54.8 percent from the floor (17-31), including 4-6 (66.7%) from three-point range in the half. By contrast, Stockton was 0-9 from beyond the arc.

The margin grew to 16 points early in the second half before the Ospreys put together a rally try. A three-point play by Dawkins was followed by a Campbell three-pointer and a layup by Azoroh for an 8-0 run that sliced the gap to eight at 50-42.

The comeback stalled as NJCU reeled off the next seven points to make it 57-42 with 13:22 remaining. Stockton stayed behind by double figures for the rest of the game, falling to the Gothic Knights 79-63.

Derryen Whyte went a perfect 4-4 from outside the arc and scored a game-high 21 points. Kayton Darley and Denzel Banks finished with 11 and 10 points respectively for NJCU.

Stockton will be home again on Saturday as NJAC leader Rutgers-Newark comes to The Sports Center for a conference game that tips off at 3 p.m.
