Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University (12-3, 7-2 NJAC) opened up an 11-point lead in the first half and stayed ahead from there to post a 75-54 victory over Rutgers-Newark (10-5, 7-2 NJAC). With the win, Stockton moved into a first-place tie with the Scarlet Raiders halfway through the conference schedule.
DJ Campbell (Vineland/Vineland) scored a game-high 21 points, his seventh time with at least 20 this season and third in the last four games. Campbell went 4-8 from three-point range.
Kadian Dawkins (Eastampton/Rancocas Valley) netted a career-high 18 points, reaching double figures for the fourth straight game. Dawkins shot 7-10 (70%) from the field and also dealt a game-high seven assists against just one turnover.
Kyion Flanders (Wildwood/Wildwood) contributed eight points, a career-best 11 rebounds and a game-high three steals while
Nick Duncsak (Toms River/TR North) added eight points on 3-6 field goal shooting.
The Ospreys trailed 14-10 before reeling off nine points in a row on three-pointers by
Luciano Lubrano (Ocean City/Ocean City),
Milo De Los Santos (Hopewell Valley/Hopewell Valley) and Campbell to take the lead for good at 19-14.
Flanders later scored four straight points for a 32-21 advantage on the way to a 34-24 lead at the half. Campbell topped everyone with 10 first-half points followed by Lubrano with six markers. As a team, Stockton shot 59.1 percent (13-22) from the floor against the top defensive team in the conference. Dawkins did not score, but he dished five assists.
The point guard then exploded for 18 of Stockton's 41 points in the second half. Rutgers-Newark was within nine at 40-31 before the Ospreys went on a 15-5 run that sealed the game. Dawkins registered seven markers and Campbell added five during the spurt, which ended with Stockton leading 55-36.
The Ospreys led by at least 14 the rest of the way and Dawkins capped the 75-54 triumph with a three-pointer at the 21-second mark for the final points of the day and a new career high, surpassing the 16 counters that he scored in the previous game.
Abe Kromah paced Rutgers-Newark with 17 points while Dante Ralph finished with nine points and a team-high eight rebounds. Jamir Patterson also scored nine points for the Scarlet Raiders.
Stockton's next game will be at Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
