Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University (15-3, 10-2 NJAC) won a fast-paced thriller 96-91 over Rowan University (15-4, 8-4 NJAC) at The Sports Center to maintain its hold on first place in the conference. The Ospreys shot 12-29 (41.4%) from three-point range in the victory.
Kyion Flanders (Wildwood/Wildwood) scored a career-high 31 points and sank the go-ahead three-pointer for Stockton with 1:28 remaining in the game. Flanders was 5-7 (71.4%) from beyond the arc and a perfect 8-8 at the line. He also snatched a game-high four steals.
DJ Campbell (Vineland/Vineland) totaled 24 points, seven rebounds and four assists, which tied for game-high honors.
Kadian Dawkins (Eastampton/Rancocas Valley) contributed a career-high 20 points, shooting 8-11 (72.7%) from the floor including 3-4 from three-point land.
Rynell Lawrence (Millville/Millville) finished with nine points and a game-high eight rebounds. The tight contest featured 19 lead changes and 11 ties. Stockton outscored Rowan 20-9 at the free throw line.
Stockton had its largest lead of the first half at 38-30 after a layup by Dawkins with 6:11 on the clock. Rowan chipped away over the last four minutes, getting within one twice before a free throw by Lawrence in the closing seconds gave the Ospreys a 44-42 edge at the break.
Campbell (13), Flanders (11) and Dawkins (11) combined for 35 of Stockton's 44 first-half points. The Ospreys shot 50 percent (9-18) from beyond the arc in the half to overcome 11 turnovers that led to 20 points off turnovers by the Profs.
Stockton fell behind by four early in the second half, matching its largest deficit of the game. Flanders scored four points during an 8-0 spurt that vaulted the Ospreys into a 57-53 lead. The evenly-matched teams exchanged baskets over the next 10 minutes, with the gap never greater than three points.
Rowan crept out to an 83-79 lead with 3:50 remaining before Stockton went on a decisive 15-5 run. After Campbell made a jumper in the paint to tie the contest 88-88, Flanders drained a deep three-pointer on Stockton's next possession to give the Ospreys the lead for good at 91-88 with 1:28 on the clock.
Dawkins sank a free throw and then
Jordan Williams (Trenton/Trenton Central) made a layup off a nifty feed by Campbell for the clincher to make it 94-88 at the 25-second mark in Stockton's 96-91 triumph.
Hafeez Melvin topped five Profs in double figures with 23 points followed by Marcellus Ross with 18 markers. Arian Azemi netted 14 points while Andrew Seager and Josh Wright finished with 11 apiece.
Stockton's next two games will be on the road, starting with a matchup at Montclair State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
