Union, N.J. – Stockton University (10-2, 5-1 NJAC) played its first game in two-and-a-half weeks and suffered an 83-75 setback to Kean University (9-3, 3-3 NJAC). The defeat snapped a six-game winning streak by the Ospreys and was their first loss since November 27.
DJ Campbell (Vineland/Vineland) tied his career high with 28 points to lead four in double figures for Stockton. Campbell shot 9-15 (60%) from the floor, 4-9 (44.4%) from three-point range and 6-7 (85.7%) at the line. He also tied for game high with four steals.
Kadian Dawkins (Eastampton/Rancocas Valley) contributed 12 points and four assists while
Kyion Flanders (Wildwood/Wildwood) added 10 markers and four assists.
Jordan Williams (Trenton/Trenton Central) shot a perfect 4-4 from the floor and finished with 10 points.
Campbell scored a quick five points while Flanders and Dawkins each sank three-pointers as Stockton raced out to an 11-2 lead that would be its largest of the game. The Ospreys led for most of the first half and trailed for just 24 seconds in a period that also saw three brief ties.
Campbell scored 14 points while Williams and Flanders tossed in seven markers as the trio sparked Stockton to a slim 31-29 lead at the break, combining to score all but three of their team's points. Dawkins sank a three-pointer for the other three counters.
The Ospreys were unable to keep pace with Kean in the second half as the Cougars shot a torrid 57.6 percent (19-33) from the floor and outscored the visitors 54-44. Kean forged a 45-41 lead but Stockton responded with an 8-2 spurt highlighted by two three-pointers from
Milo De Los Santos (Hopewell Valley/Hopewell Valley).
The run gave Stockton a 49-47 edge with 13:11 on the clock. After a pair of free throws by Campbell, the Ospreys led by two again at 55-53 with 11:16 to play. Kean then unleashed a 15-2 run that put Stockton in a 69-57 hole with 7:12 left.
The Ospreys tried to rally, closing the gap to 77-73 on a trey by Campbell at the 3:15 mark, but Kean scored six of the last eight points of the game to hold off Stockton 83-75.
Patrick Strzala went a blistering 5-6 (83.3%) from three-point range and finished with a team-high 24 points for the host Cougars. Letrell West and Nate Lyles chipped in with 14 points apiece.
Stockton will be back on the road on Saturday for an NJAC matchup at William Paterson that begins at 3 p.m.
