Stockton Outslugs Stevenson 12-9

Auburndale, FL –Stockton University (6-3-1) won for the third time in four games during Spring Break in Florida, with a 12-9 victory over Stevenson University (4-13-1) on Monday night. Freshman Thomas Elgrim (Fair Haven/Rumson-Fair Haven) rapped three hits and drove in a career-high five runs in the game.

After two scoreless frames, Stockton broke out with four runs in the top of the third inning to take a 4-0 lead. RBI by Jordan Nitti (Hamilton/Steinert), Dominic Meleo (Freehold/St. Peter's Prep), Elgrim and Luke Fabrizzi (Old Bridge/St. John Vianney) pushed the Ospreys to the lead.

It was short lived as the Mustangs answered with a five spot in their half of the inning to garner a one run advantage at 5-4. That would last until the fifth frame when Stockton plated three more runs on Elgrim's first of two triples and a wild pitch for the 7-5 margin.

After Stevenson sliced the lead to 7-6 after six frames, Stockton exploded for five markers in the top of the eighth to seal the game. Tucker Elder (Ewing/Ewing), John Perrino (Wall/Wall) and Tommy Talbot (Howell/Howell) singled to load the bases.

Nitti drove in one run, then Elgrim blasted his second three bagger of the game to clear the bases. He would score on a wild pitch and Stockton grabbed a 12-6 advantage. Stevenson scored three more runs in the bottom of the ninth, but the rally fell short as Stockton came away with the 12-9 win.

Freshman Chris Gonzalez (Hazlet/Raritan) started and threw the first five innings to secure his first career victory on the mound. He allowed four hits and three earned runs for the win.

Perrino continued his torrid hitting with three more hits, with Nitti, Meleo and Fabrizzi adding two safeties each in the 14-hit attack. Nitti also had two RBI for the day.

The Ospreys will play again tomorrow against NYU at George Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, FL. Game time is scheduled for 6 pm.
