Stockton Wins Over St. Elizabeth 5-4

Galloway, NJ –Stockton University (8-6-1) came from behind and downed St. Elizabeth University (4-9) by a 5-4 final on Tuesday afternoon.  Jordan Nitti (Hamilton/Steinert) and Tucker Elder (Ewing/Ewing) both had three hits on the day. The game was shortened to eight innings due to darkness.

Stockton broke out on the board in the bottom of the first inning as John Perrino (Wall/wall) reached on an error, Tommy Talbot (Howell/Howell) walked, then the runners pulled off a double steal. After Perrino was gunned down at the plate on a fielder's choice, Dominic Meleo (Freehold/St. Peter's Prep) scored Talbot for a 1-0 lead.

The Eagles were held down until the fourth inning, when they scored four runs on four hits for a 4-1 lead after four innings of play. The visitors threatened in their half of the fifth frame but could not add on to their lead.

The Ospreys bounced back in their half of the inning plating four runs on five hits and an error. Elder doubled and scored on a Perrino single. Talbot singled to put runners on first and third with one out. Nitti doubled to score two more and it was 4-4. After a pitching change, Thomas Elgrim (Fair Haven/Rumson-Fair Haven) singled to score Nitti and gave the home team the lead at 5-4.

From there the Stockton bullpen took over as Michael Wynne (Howell/Howell) tossed two innings with two strikeouts in relief of starter Chris Gonzalez (Hazlet/Raritan). Phil Santa Maria (Absecon/ACIT) and Andrew Luongo (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) each pitched a scoreless inning to nail down the 5-4 victory, as Luongo notched his first career save.

Nitti rapped two doubles among his three hits, and scored the eventual winning run, with Talbot scoring a pair of runs for Stockton.

Josh Koller, Jacob Pipercic, Drew Zimmerman, and Paul Hamilton each had two hits for the Eagles.

The Ospreys next games will be a doubleheader against McDaniel College. The twin bill in Westminster, MD is scheduled for Saturday with the first game starting at 12 pm.
