Stockton Stifled by FDU-Florham 5-3

Madison, NJ –Stockton University (12-13-1, 3-3 NJAC) rallied late but could not overcome FDU-Florham (16-10), falling 5-3 on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference matchup. Tucker Elder (Ewing/Ewing) topped the ospreys with two hits on the afternoon.

The Devils jumped out early against starter Phil Santa Maria (Absecon/ACIT), plating three runs in the bottom of the first for a quick 3-0 lead. Santa Maria, the first of seven Osprey hurlers, was making his first start of the season.

FDU tacked on a pair of runs in the fifth for a 5-0 lead, while holding Stockton hitless through the first five frames. The Ospreys threatened in the top of the sixth, loading the bases on three hits, but could not capitalize.

Stockton finally broke through in the top of the seventh when Ryan Mihlebach (Clarksboro/GCIT) blasted his second homer of the year to make it 5-1. Later in the inning, Robbie Ford (Green Twp./Newton) scored Giovanni Sciarrotta (Barnegat/Barnegat) with a sacrifice fly to slice the margin to 5-2.

An inning later, Dominic Meleo (Freehold/St. Peter's Prep) doubled and scored on an error to get the Ospreys one run closer at 5-3. But the rally ended there, as the Devils picked up the 5-3 win.

Tommy Moore led the Devils with three hits. Jimmy Finnerty and Moore both drove in a pair of runs.

The Ospreys will be back home for NJAC play on Thursday when the Ospreys will host Rutgers-Camden. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
