Galloway, NJ –Stockton University (13-13-1, 4-3 NJAC) came from behind and captured a walk-off 3-2 victory over Rutgers-Camden (15-12, 2-5 NJAC) on Thursday afternoon.
Tucker Elder (Ewing/Ewing) and
Sam Nieves (South Plainfield/South Plainfield) led the Ospreys with two hits each.
The Scarlet Raptors struck first in the top half of the first inning scoring one run on two hits for a 1-0 lead against Ospreys starter
Michael Wynne (Howell/Howell). Stockton took a 2-1 lead after three innings on two hits and two errors.
Elder singled, then
John Perrino (Wall/Wall) topped a ball to third base. Perrino beat the throw, but the ensuing throw allowed Elder to race around from first base to score. Another errant toss trying to get Perrino at third allowed the senor to score and give the Ospreys a 2-1 advantage.
From there it became a pitching duel between Wynne and Camden starter Nick Diaz. Neither hurler allowed another run in their six plus innings of work. Stockton took advantage of some sterling defense as
Dominic Meleo (Freehold/St. Peter's Prep) made a sensational diving catch in the top of the fifth frame to keep Stockton ahead.
In the top of the seventh, Stockton again relied on some great glove work. After the Scarlet Raptors advanced a runner to second with one out,
Robbie Ford (Green Twp./Newton) turned in a gem at shortstop to aid reliever
Andrew Luongo (Manahawkin/Southern Regional). Luongo enticed the next hitter to fly out to end the inning.
In the top of the ninth, the visitors knotted the game on three hits and an error for the 2-2 tie. But Stockton would capture the contest in the bottom of the ninth. Nieves doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch. With one away, pinch-hitter
Luke Fabrizzi (Old Bridge/St. John Vianney) grounded a ball up the middle, scoring Nieves and giving the Ospreys the walk-off victory.
Freshman
Dylan Sakele (Rumson/Rumson-Fair Haven) picked up the win, his third of the season. Stockton's bullpen of Luongo,
Kyle Cipolla (Westwood/Westwood) and Sakele, was outstanding allowing just one run on four hits in relief of Wynne. Wynne tossed six strong innings, allowing four hits, one runs and striking out five.
Auggie Uzdanovic Topped the Raptors with three hits and had the lone RBI on the day.
The two teams will be back at it tomorrow in Camden to finish the home-and-home series. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm.
