Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University (15-13, 4-6 NJAC) earned a pair of run-rule victories in conference play by shutting out New Jersey City (9-18, 1-9 NJAC) 9-0 in six innings and 8-0 in five innings. The Ospreys hit three home runs in the doubleheader sweep.
In the opener, freshman pitcher
Nicole Smith (Mt. Bethel, Pa./Bangor Area) recorded her first career win and shutout by tossing a two-hitter and striking out two batters.
Jenna Patterson (Mullica Hill/Clearview) went 3-4 with a double, home run and three RBI.
Vanessa Tancini (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) and
Gracie Meyer (Pittsgrove/A.P. Schalick) contributed two hits apiece.
Patterson singled home Meyer in the third inning to open the scoring. In the fourth stanza,
Charli Czaczkowski (Jackson/Jackson Memorial) slugged a solo homer to right field, Tancini rapped an RBI double and then scored on an RBI single by Meyer to make it 4-0.
The Ospreys added two more runs in the fifth as
Lilly James (Roseland/West Essex) notched an RBI with a squeeze bunt and Czaczkowski scored on a wild pitch. In the sixth inning, Tancini stole third and scored on a throwing error, and Patterson slugged a walkoff, two-run homer to invoke the run rule for a 9-0 win.
Freshman hurler
Nerina Tramp (Blackwood/Highland) tossed four scoreless innings, allowing one hit and fanning three to earn the victory in the nightcap. Tancini went 2-2 with a double, inside-the-park homer and three RBI. Meyer was 2-3 with two runs and an RBI as she extended her hitting streak to six games.
Meyer singled and scored on a sacrifice bunt by
Kayla Posten (Cherry Hill/CH West) in the first inning to get the Ospreys on the board. In the second frame, Tancini sliced a ball into the left field corner and raced around the bases for her first career home run and a 2-0 Stockton lead.
The Ospreys broke the game open with a four-run third inning that was highlighted by an RBI double from Patterson and a two-run double by Tancini. Meyer stroked an RBI single in the fourth inning and later scored on an error for an 8-0 advantage.
Stevie Unger (Tower City, Pa./Williams Valley) came out of the bullpen in relief of Tramp and pitched a scoreless top of the fifth to close the 8-0 triumph.
Up next, Stockton will play an NJAC doubleheader at #13 Rowan University on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
