Stockton Opens NJAC Play with Two Against Ramapo

Mahwah, NJ –Stockton University (10-9-1, 1-1 NJAC) began NJAC Conference play with a doubleheader split against Ramapo College (8-9, 1-1 NJAC) on Saturday afternoon. The Roadrunners captured the first game 6-1, before Stockton gained a split with a 9-2 victory in the nightcap. Mike Schiattarella (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) earned his fourth win of the season in the second game.

Stockton opened the scoring in game one with a single marker in the second inning. With two away, freshman Thomas Elgrim (Fair Haven/Rumson-Fair Haven) walked and advanced to second on a Sam Nieves (South Plainfield/South Plainfield) single. Tommy Talbot (Howell/Howell) drove in Elgrim and the Ospreys had a 1-0 lead.

From there it was all Roadrunners, as they plated three runs in the fourth, a pair in the sixth and a single tally in the eighth to top off the 6-1 victory. The Ramapo pitchers held the Ospreys to just four hits in the contest.

Stockton earned the split in a big way in the nightcap, scoring five times in the first inning. John Perrino (Wall/Wall) smashed his fourth triple of the year and scored on a Jordan Nitti (Hamilton/Steinert) RBI. Nitti came around to score on an error, before Elgrim, Giovanni Sciarrotta (Barnegat/Barnegat) and Ryan Swift (Sewell/Washington Twp.) picked up RBI for the 5-0 lead after one inning.

Ramapo came back with two runs in their half of the second inning, to slice the margin to 5-2, but that was all they would score in the game.

The Ospreys added three markers in the seventh inning and a solo tally in the eighth for the 9-2 win in support of Schiattarella. The junior was solid again, pitching eight innings, scattering seven hits with 11 strikeouts and one walk.

Perrino banged out three hits, scored twice and had two RBI. Elgrim and Dominic Meleo (Freehold/St. Peter's Prep), both had two hits in the 11-hit assault in the second game.

Matt Carovillano totaled five hits, three RBI and two runs to lead the Roadrunners on the day.

The Ospreys will travel to Glenside, PA for their next game, as the Ospreys will face Arcadia in a non-conference tilt on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm
