Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University (10-6, 1-1 NJAC) opened conference play with a doubleheader split against Ramapo College (9-4, 1-1 NJAC) on Saturday afternoon. Stockton took game one with an 11-3 win in five innings, before the Roadrunners took the nightcap 8-4.
Michaela Luyber (Bordentown/Bordentown) led the Ospreys with five hits and four runs on the day.
Stockton scored in every inning in the first game, taking the first match 11-3. They scored single runs in three of the first four innings, with a two-spot in the second for a 5-3 lead heading into the fifth inning.
The Ospreys exploded for six runs on five hits to put the game away, with the game winning RBI by
Jenna Patterson (Mullica Hill/Clearview) giving the home squad the game on the run rule.
Samantha McErlane (Mont Ephraim/Audubon) tossed a complete game, allowing two earned runs and two hits, in earning her fifth win of the season.
The Roadrunners jumped out early against starter
Stevie Unger (Tower City, PA/Williams Valley), scoring three runs and chasing Unger in the opening frame. Freshman
Nicole Smith (Mount Bethel, PA/Bangor Area) came on in relief and slowed the visitors after that.
The Ospreys gained some ground in the second and third innings to slice the margin to 5-4 after three innings. In the second stanza, the Ospreys scored twice on an error and fielder's choice, then in the next inning, Patterson doubled and scored on a Luyber hit,
Charli Czaczkowski (Jackson/Jackson Memorial) doubled to score Luyber and bring Stockton within one marker.
That was as close as the home team would get as Ramapo tallied three more times in the sixth inning to seal the 8-4 win and a split of the doubleheader.
Brianna Segnello (Mount Olive/Mount Olive),
Gracie Meyer (Pittsgrove/A.P. Schalick) and Czaczkowski all had three hits on the day, with Czaczkowski driving in three RBI and Meyer scoring three times. Smith tossed six innings allowing just three earned runs while striking out three in the second game.
For Ramapo Katie Rygiel had three hits and three RBI, including a home run in the first game.
Stockton will have a quick turnaround as the Ospreys will face Muhlenberg College tomorrow for a twin bill. First game is scheduled for 1pm in Allentown, PA.
