Brooklyn, NY – Stockton University (13-17-1, 4-6 NJAC) could not hold an early lead, and fell to NYU (18-9) by a score of 10-9 on Wednesday afternoon.
Giovanni Sciarrotta (Barnegat/Steinert) led the Ospreys with three hits on the day.
The Ospreys pounced early as
Ryan Mihlebach (Clarksboro/GCIT) blasted a grand slam for a 4-0 lead in the first inning, his third round-tripper of the season. The Violets plated one run in their half before Stockton expanded the lead with three more markers in the second inning.
Sciarrotta and
Austin Beard (Toms River/Toms River South) singled.
Sam Nieves (South Plainfield/South Plainfield) tripled scoring both runners, then scored on a
Jordan Nitti (Hamilton/Steinert) single for the 7-1 lead. The Violets kept picking away with single runs in the second and third before putting up a three spot in the fourth to close within one at 7-6 after four frames.
In the sixth inning,
Luke Fabrizzi (Old Bridge/St. John Vianney) walked before Sciarrotta blasted his first career home run, a two-run shot to give the Ospreys breathing room at 9-6. The Ospreys had one last chance in the top of the ninth inning to add on another run. With the game knotted a 9-9, Stockton loaded the bases with one out but could not capitalize.
NYU captured the contest in the bottom of the final frame with a sacrifice fly and the walk-off 10-9 victory.
Nitti added a pair of hits to the offense, with Nieves scoring twice and driving in a pair of runs.
Stockton will return home for an NJAC matchup against The College of New Jersey tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
