Stockton Prevails Over NYU 12-11

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (16-19-1, 6-8 NJAC) and New York University (18-13) hooked up for the third time this season, with the Ospreys coming out on top 12-11 on Wednesday afternoon. Ryan Mihlebach (Clarksboro/GCIT) blasted a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth to give Stockton the victory. NYU had won the previous two matchups this year.

The Violets started strong scoring seven runs in the first two innings, before Stockton's bats awoke. The Ospreys sent twelve batters to the plate in the bottom of the second inning, scoring eight times on eight hits to forge ahead 8-7 after just two frames. Two RBI each in the inning by Sam Nieves (South Plainfield/South Plainfield) and Robbie Ford (Green Twp./Newton) were the big hits in the stanza.

Stockton plated three more markers in the bottom of the fourth inning, adding to the lead. Luke Fabrizzi (Old Bridge/St. John Vianney) doubled and scored on a Thomas Elgrim (Fair Haven/Rumson-Fair Haven) two-bagger. Dominic Meleo (Freehold/St. Peter's Prep) had an RBI and Mihlebach's sacrifice fly accounted for the other two tallies and the lead was 11-7.

The Violets clawed back with two runs in the sixth and seventh frames to knot the game at 11 runs apiece. Neither team scored in the eighth, setting up the tense final inning. NYU put a couple of runners on base, but could not score, leaving the heroics to Mihlebach in the home half of the inning.

Leading off the inning, he blasted the first pitch he saw over the left centerfield fence, for his fourth homer of the year and gave Stockton the 12-11 victory and the third straight win for the Ospreys. It was the third time this season Stockton has been victorious in walk-off fashion.

Fabrizzi led all players with four hits and scored a pair of runs. Ford, Nieves, Elgrim and Mihlebach all had two RBI, as Stockton rapped out seventeen hits in the contest. Five other players got two hits each in support of Fabrizzi. Aaron Winsker (Baltimore, MD/Hereford), the sixth Osprey hurler on the day, earned his second win of the season, tossing the scoreless ninth inning.

For the Violets, Ryan Carr, and Nick Argenziano both had three hits, with Carr scoring four ties and Argenziano driving in three runs.

Stockton will return to NJAC play beginning tomorrow afternoon when the Ospreys will travel to Glassboro to face Rowan University. Game time is set for 3:30 pm. The Profs are ranked #7 nationally in the latest D3baseball.com/NCBWA poll.
