Galloway, NJ –Stockton University (12-12-1, 3-3 NJAC) banged out 35 hits and 30 runs as the Ospreys out slugged New Jersey City (8-15, 0-4 NJAC), sweeping a doubleheader by scores of 15-13 and 15-11 in eight innings.
Sam Nieves (South Plainfield/South Plainfield) led the attack with seven hits, five runs and four RBI on the day.
The Gothic Knights were the home team for both ends of the twin bill due to unplayable conditions in Jersey City.
The offensive explosion started early as Stockton managed a 4-3 lead after two innings in the first game. The Ospreys scored four times in the second frame, with two coming on Nieves' second bomb of the year. The Knights answered with three runs in the third to take a 6-4 advantage, but Stockton tallied runs in the next three frames to re-take the lead at 8-7 after six innings.
The fireworks continued heavily in the eighth inning with the Ospreys scoring four times, only to see NJCU plate five runs in their half of the inning. The big blow was a grand slam by Ricky Voss that knotted the game at 12-12 heading into the ninth inning.
A pair of walks and a long home run by
Ryan Mihlebach (Clarksboro/GCIT), gave Stockton a 15-12 lead going into the bottom of the frame. It was Mihlebach's first career homer and came at an opportune time. The Gothic Knights got one back in the ninth on Justin Moreno's home run, but
Robbie Ford (Green Twp./Newton) picked up his first career save in his first collegiate appearance on the mound.
The Ospreys looked to put game two away by building an 11-6 lead after six innings, but NJCU fought back soring five times in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 11-11. The Ospreys scored four ties in the top of the eighth to capture the second game.
Ryan Swift (Sewell/Washington Twp.) walked and
Giovanni Sciarrotta (Barnegat/Barnegat) singled, his third hit of the game, with one away.
With two down,
Tucker Elder (Ewing/Ewing) doubled to plate the runners for a 13-11 lead.Â
John Perrino (Wall/Wall) singled home Elder before
Jordan Nitti (Hamilton/Steinert) doubled home Perrino for the 15-11 win and the sweep of the doubleheader. The game ended after eight innings due to darkness.
In addition to Nieves, Mihlebach scored five runs, with Ford rapping four hits and driving in five runs.
Andrew Luongo (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) and
Dylan Sakele (Rumson/Rumson-Fair Haven) earned wins in the relief.
For NJCU, Voss had six hits, including his grand slam, with Bryan Fernandez totaling seven RBI on the day, including a home run among his five hits.
The Ospreys will travel to Madison, NJ for their next game, as the Ospreys will face FDU-Florham on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
