Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (3-2) took advantage of a pair of penalty strokes, to defeat Cabrini University (6-1) by a 3-2 score on Thursday afternoon. Sophomore
Makenna LeHenaff (Burlington/Burlington Twp.) and freshman
Alyssa Greiner (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) scored their first career goals in the match.
The Cavaliers pressed the play through the first quarter but could not break through as the squads played to a scoreless tie. 1:57 into the second frame Caroline Gallagher potted her 10th goal of the season to give the victors a 1-0 lead.
The Ospreys evened the score at 21:07 when the home squad was awarded the first of the two penalty strokes on the day. Greiner, making her first appearance this season, made it count to knot the game at 1-1.
Stockton took the lead just over seven minutes later when
Jenna Fiorito (East Greenville, PA/Upper Perkiomen) tallied her second marker of the year for a 2-1 lead for Stockton. She took a pass from
Autumn Hunter (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) at the right post of the cage for the score.
Gallagher scored again on a solo breakaway, stick handling through the Stockton defense for her 11th goal of the season, 31 seconds into the third period and a 2-2 tie.
1:45 into the final quarter, Stockton was awarded a second penalty stroke, this time LeHenaff took the shot and scored for a one goal advantage. It would be the eventual game-winning marker. From there, the defense held off the charging Cavaliers and came away with the 3-2 victory.
Goalkeeper
Kylie Mitchell (Shamong/Seneca) made two saves in net for the Ospreys, earning her third win of the season. LeHenaff also had a defensive save for the Ospreys.
For Cabrini, Courtney Keith made three saves, including a pair on the deciding fourth period
The Ospreys will take to the road for their next match, traveling to Elizabethtown, PA to face off against Elizabethtown College on Saturday. Game time is set for 1 pm.
