Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (2-1) played staunch defense but came up on the short end of a 1-0 score to #10 ranked Scranton (2-0) on Sunday afternoon.
Megan Brady (Rockaway/Morris Knolls) made four saves in net for the Ospreys who were outshot 13-2 on the day. The Royals are ranked #10 by the United Soccer Coaches.
The teams battled through the first 45 minutes playing to a scoreless draw. The Ospreys allowed just four attempts by the Royals with none being on net. Stockton had their best opportunity of the day in the 10th minute when
Sydney Williams (Millville/Millville) was sent in alone on the Royals net. Unfortunately, her tip ahead to herself went too far and the attempt ended there.
The visitors turned up the heat in the second stanza, squeezing off nine shots, until finally breaking through for the lone tally of the game. After a handball just outside the box was called in the 66th minute against Stockton, Teresa Hegarty fired a perfectly placed free kick to the upper left corner for the score.
The Ospreys would not relent though as the home squad had a couple of opportunities in the final five minutes but could not capitalize on a pair of crossing passes and the final score was set at 1-0 in favor of Scranton.
Erica Dietz (Allentown, PA/Central Catholic) and
Emily Hauck (Lebanon, PA/Northern Lebanon) fired the only two shots of the contest, with Dietz getting the only shot on net.
Nicole Olson made the lone save for the Royals in net, posting the shutout.
Stockton will travel to Madison, NJ on Wednesday for the Ospreys' next contest. They will face Drew University for a 7 pm matchup.
