Jersey City, N.J. – Stockton University (8-8, 3-6 NJAC) was edged 59-56 by New Jersey City (6-8, 6-3 NJAC) on a traditional three-point play with less than a second remaining. The Ospreys have been close in several games this season, and this was their third loss by five points or less.
Freshman
Imene Fathi (Wildwood/Wildwood) scored a career-high 19 points and tied her career best with six rebounds.
Adriyana Jennings (Camden/Winslow Twp.) notched her seventh double-double of the season with 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Emma Morrone (Maywood/Hackensack) contributed 10 points and five rebounds plus team highs of three assists and three steals.
Madison Dulude (Sewell/Washington Twp.) grabbed nine boards and scored four points.
Stockton trailed 44-34 early in the fourth quarter but battled back to tie the game 56-56 on a jumper by Jennings with 3.5 seconds left. Following a timeout, NJCU's Damaris Rodriguez, the conference leader in scoring (24.1 ppg), sank a jumper and was fouled with three-tenths of a second on the clock. Rodriguez made the free throw for the 59-56 final score.
Earlier, the Ospreys got off to a strong start by doubling NJCU 16-8 in the first quarter behind six points by Fathi and four apiece from Jennings and Morrone. The Gothic Knights controlled the second period, outscoring Stockton 20-6 for a 28-22 count at the break.
The Ospreys trailed 42-32 after three and 44-34 with 9:18 remaining. Fathi led the comeback with 11 markers and fellow freshman
Nicole Strumolo (Denville/Morris Catholic) netted all seven of her points during the 22-12 run that ended with the game-tying jumper by Jennings with 3.5 ticks on the clock.
Rodriguez totaled game highs of 28 points and six assists plus eight rebounds in addition to her game-winning heroics in the final second. Jaded-Dee Tolentino tossed in nine counters for the home team.
Stockton will be on the road again on Wednesday for an NJAC game at Rowan University at 5:30 p.m.
