Glassboro, N.J. – Stockton University (8-9, 3-7 NJAC) began the second half of the conference schedule with a 63-54 setback in a road game at Rowan University (10-7, 6-4). The Ospreys got off to a strong start and opened up an 11-point lead late in the second quarter.
Emma Morrone (Maywood/Hackensack) shot 7-11 (63.6%) from the floor and scored a team-high 15 points. Morrone also tallied a game-high six steals plus five rebounds.
Adriyana Jennings (Camden/Winslow Twp.) recorded her second straight double-double and eighth of the season with 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Freshman
Nicole Strumolo (Denville/Morris Catholic) established a career high with 13 points. Strumolo went a perfect 3-3 at the line and hit two three-pointers.
Stockton fell behind 13-6 in the first eight minutes before finding its game. Sparked by a Strumolo three-pointer, the Ospreys closed with a 5-1 spurt to pull within 14-11 at the end of the period.
The second quarter was Stockton's best as the Ospreys put up 19 points and surged to a double-digit lead. Morrone and Strumolo netted five points apiece to lead a 16-2 run that gave Stockton a 27-16 advantage with 2:59 on the clock.
The Ospreys still led 30-21 after Strumolo was fouled attempting a three-pointer and sank all three free throws. Rowan answered with five points in the last 30 seconds to trim Stockton's lead to 30-26 at the break. Strumolo (11) and Morrone (9) accounted for 20 of their team's 30 points.
Stockton held the lead for most of the third quarter before Rowan eked ahead 42-40 in the last minute of the period. After freshman
Brianna Robinson (Cape May CH/Middle Twp.) tied the game 42-42 with a jumper early in the fourth quarter, the Profs took the lead for good with seven straight points to make it 49-42.
Stockton got within two at 51-49 on a
Madison LaRosa (Oceanport/Shore Regional) three-pointer with 3:04 on the clock, but the Ospreys were outscored 12-5 the rest of the way and fell 63-54.
Grace Marshall scored a game-high 22 points for Rowan, followed by Kate Herlihy with 10 markers and Nicole Mallard with nine points and seven rebounds.
Stockton returns home to host Ramapo College at The Sports Center on Saturday at 1 p.m.
