Montclair, N.J. – Stockton University (8-6, 3-4 NJAC) led at the end of the third quarter but faltered in the fourth period and was downed 72-61 by Montclair State (6-7, 3-3). The Ospreys netted just 11 points in the decisive final quarter.
Madison LaRosa (Oceanport/Shore Regional) led Stockton with a team-high 16 points. LaRosa shot a perfect 6-6 at the free throw line.
Emma Morrone (Maywood/Hackensack) chipped in with 13 points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists.
Adriyana Jennings (Camden/Winslow Twp.) finished with nine points, six rebounds and three steals for the Ospreys. As a team, Stockton shot an impressive 21-28 (75%) at the free throw line.
After falling behind 19-13 in the first quarter, the Ospreys evened the game with an 18-12 second stanza. LaRosa and Morrone led the charge with five and four points in the period respectively. Morrone scored all 13 of her points in the first half, which ended in a 31-31 tie.
Stockton fell behind 40-34 in the third quarter before outscoring the Red Hawks 16-8 the rest of the way to pull ahead 50-48. LaRosa scored nine of the 16 markers, including a three-pointer with five seconds left that made it 50-48.
Madison Dulude (Sewell/Washington Twp.) netted five points during the comeback.
The Ospreys were on top 52-50 with 8:55 remaining, but they went scoreless for the next 4:34 while Montclair State reeled off 14 unanswered points. The result was a 64-52 deficit from which Stockton could not recover, and the visitors fell 72-61.
Nickie Carter paced Montclair State with game highs of 27 points and five assists. Mahogany Worsley-Wooten added 12 points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists.
Stockton will host Kean University on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in the Ospreys' first home game in a month.
